Growing up, there were few women on TV that shared the same deep, brown complexion as me and even fewer that played lead roles. More often than not, they played the single, smart-mouthed sidekick to the fairer skinned friend who had it allโ€“ a man and dream job included. While there may have been some exceptions to that sterotype, thatโ€™s what I saw for the most part.

Needless to say, it was refreshing when a character came along that broke the mold. For me, that character was Dark-Skinned Aunt Viv. Actress Janet Hubert, played the original and darker aunt Vivian on 90โ€™s sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Although her character was ultimately replaced, she still stands out in the minds of many. Rapper J. Cole even dropped a line about her in his 2014 single, No Role Modelz.
